Emeritus Bishop of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan Nathaniel Garang Anyieth has told South Sudanese Christians in Nairobi, Kenya, that there is still a chance for peace in South Sudan, if only people can turn to Jesus Christ.

Emeritus Bishop of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan Nathaniel Garang Anyieth has told South Sudanese Christians in Nairobi, Kenya, that there is still a chance for peace in South Sudan, if only people can turn to Jesus Christ.

“I am confident that God can change people, he will change our leaders, and he will turn our leaders’ hearts into peace, to think peace and speak peace,” said the Bishop.

Speaking on Sunday 21st December at St. Luke’s parish, the bishop said the problem in the country is with people and not leaders.

“When people are good, they will elect good leaders. But the bad people always destroy their good leaders,” he said. “In this Christmas season, South Sudanese must stand up and pray together for peace.”

He warned South Sudanese to stop hatred by putting behind them what happened in the country and think about their future.

Young people must invest in their future and avoid divisive politics. He said the nation belongs to young people and the church too.

He was speaking at a time when the peace talks have resumed in Addis Ababa, and when the Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) chief mediator Seyoum Mesfin has expressed hope that peace will be achieved in the latest round of talks.

The two major protagonists in the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) had been given a break to go and consult their constituencies before resuming the talks in December.
