A renowned South Sudanese religious scholar has said peace in South Sudan remains the responsibility of every individual. He said this during a service to mark New Year celebrations.
Speaking to thousands who attended a service at St. Luke’s Church in Nairobi, Rev. Dr. Stephen Mathiang Kuc from Episcopal Church of South Sudan said New Year is all about glorifying God for his great protection and blessings that he has given over the last year.
“My message to you for the New Year is unity, peace, reconciliation and love for your enemies. Our people have suffered because of wars, there are people who have witnessed death by hunger, by bullet, or by sickness fighting for liberation. Today we have gone back to the same situation, the only way out is we must pray for peace in our country this year,” he said.
He challenged those present to make a wise choices by making Jesus Christ the center of their lives.
“As a Christian, who is your shepherd? Is it money, Satan, human forces or God?” Kuc asked the congregation. “Today the world is not like sometimes back, you need to give your life to God for protection upon you, your family, your job and the nation.”
He asked South Sudanese to pray for their country so that they can all celebrate next year while at home.
“It is bad when we are full in foreign churches, while our churches back home are empty because of conflict,” said Dr. Kuc.
He reminded the congregation that anybody can fail them but it is only Jesus who will rescue them because he will give to his people whatever they ask.
“My message to South Sudanese is that go out and make changes in the new year, let the world know you are a peace loving nation, let the world know you can forgive one another, let the world know your problem is solvable,” he exhorted the people.
