[Yei, South Sudan] The High court in South Sudan’s Yei River County has sentenced two foreigners to three years imprisonment for faking South Sudan money.

 

The local authorities arrested Democratic Republic of Congo’s Solomon Longozi and Abuka Batuluka Paul a national of Central Africa Republic in May this year before convicted on Tuesday September 1, 2015.

The two were accused of counterfeiting 150,000 South Sudan pounds notes, the court said.

According to the court, the two were arrested in May 2015 when they were found in possession of materials such as chemicals and black paper used for forging money.

Obech Denyong, the High court judge in Yei River County said, the court convicted foreign nationals after receiving what he described as sufficient evidence from the complainers.

“There is sufficient evidence to convict the two accused under section 1, 5, 6 of the (South Sudan) penal code 2008. Based on conviction under the set sections, the court inflicted the following judgments”, Denyong told the press.

The first and second accused are sentenced to imprisonment for a term of three years with effect from 2 of May 2015”.

Judge Obech added that the counterfeiting materials must be destroyed.

The two foreigners were among the four other suspects including two Ugandans tried by the court early in August 2015. The two Ugandan nationals were released after the court said they were innocent.

This is not the first time cases of money faking is heard in South Sudan.
