The governor of Central Equatoria state Clement Wani Konga has formed a four-man committee to investigate clashes between the Mundari and Bari communities along Kwerjik River, that led to massive displacement of people and loss of life in northern Bari Payam.
According to states officials, the fighting started last Sunday morning and continued on Monday and Tuesday. Konga established a committee to find out the root cause of the incident.
The committee members are David Charles Ali Bibal, Col. Ater Nicola, Lt. Col Alex Makelele and George Loro, wh is also the deputy secretary general for the governor of Central Equatoria.
The governor asked the team to take their oath seriously and to be fair and transparent as they do their work in finding the cause of fighting which led to death and wounding of people from both sides. The governor asked the committee to report back to him within14days from the day of their appointment.
Konga called on all the state citizens to remain calm while the committee and the police do their work.
“We need, as government and citizens, to help in settling the problem rather than acting as escalators of the problem,” said the governor.
He said that the incident should not be treated as tribal conflict between Mundari and Bari, but should be seen as a problem which emanated from individuals from these two tribes.
”Iit would just be a matter of time for the government and the whole community of CES to fix this problem once and for all,” he said.
The government of CES condemned the incident and once again appealed for calm and self-restraint. It also sent a message of condolence to the families of those who died.
‘We also sympathise with those who are injured and are undergoing treatment, those whose houses were burned and displace,” said a statement from the state government.
The governor further said the police force shall maintain its presence in the ground till the situation come back to normal and the citizens’ safety is assured. The governor said he was saddened by the recent conflict which engulf the state..
The conflict is said to have started after some Mundari cattle keepers took their cattle for grazing along Kwerjik River and in the process, the cattle destroyed vegetable farms of the natives of northern Bari Payam. This angered the farmers who confronted the cattle keepers, resulting into a fight that led to the loss of lives, displacement and destruction of houses.
