[Bor, South Sudan, TCT] A fatal boat accident has claimed 10 lives in Bor, after two boats collided. According to authorities in Bor, the accident occurred at 11PM after the boat from Bor collided head on with another from Juba at Mabior Jiei.
The boat that was heading to Juba capsized carrying 75 travellers. Two passengers were injured in the tragic accident while 63 were rescued.
However, 10 souls were lost, with nine bodies recovered immediately. The boat was carrying children, women, and some foreigners while the boat from Bor was ferrying cargo and some passengers, all whom survived.
The operators of the two boats are in police custody in Bor as investigations into how the two vessels were travelling outside of the legal hours ensue.
All personnel involved in approving departure of boats have been suspended and placed under investigation to ascertain the circumstances under which the boat departed Bor in relation to the mayor’s Provisional Order No. 003/2019 for the banning of departure of boats from Bor River Port after 2:00 PM.
Jonglei State Government in conjunction with Bor Municipal Council (BMC) have launched an investigation into this tragic accident while a criminal investigation is underway, carried out by the Police. The authorities sent their prayers for the families of the deceased.
