[Juba, South Sudan, TCT] While addressing the extra ordinary convention of the ruling party, SPLM, president Kiir made a rare move to apologize to South Sudanese, saying SPLM party has caused people of South Sudan suffering and loss of lives.

“this war was uncalled for, we have made our people suffered and precious lives were loss for nothing, we could have sit down and solve leadership problems peacefully like the way we are sitting here today” he said referring to the conflict which broke out in December 2013.

The uncommon apology was first of its kind for the president of South Sudan to publicly say sorry to the people of South Sudan.

Emphasizing on his commitment to the implementation of peace deal intended to end the 2 years conflict, President Kiir also told the delegates of the convention that he has issued a decree appointing 50 members of SPLM in opposition into the national legislative assembly as spelt out by the agreement.

“I have received the list of 50 members from Dr. Riek Machar to be appointed as members of National Parliament, I have already issued a decree appointing them”, said the president.

Speaking in the same convention, the Deputy President of South Africa and Deputy Chairperson of African National Congress –ANC Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa said South Sudanese people need peace, services and stable economy.

“Your people have suffered so much and we the ANC, CCM Tanzania co-grantors of Arusha SPLM unification agreement wanted you to implement peace as the only way to deliver your people from devastated situation”, he said.

Gen. Taban Deng Gai the head of advance team of SPLM-IO in Juba and Chief negotiator of SPLM-IO who spoke on behalf of SPLM-IO leadership told the gathering that the leaders of this country must prepare for a transition to retire from the SPLM to open ways for young people to participate in the ruling of the nation.

Taban also affirmed to the delegates that his movement is ready to implement the agreement in whole.

“The SPLM-IO has declared silence of gun in South Sudan wherever the SPLM/A-IO forces exist. This is to guarantee the implementation of ceasefire and security arrangement that was signed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia”, Taban explains.

While stressing on his commitment for full implementation of the peace agreement signed in August 2015, Taban cautioned that the creation of 28 states by the president was a violation of agreement adding that the peace agreement was based on ten states.

“The SPLM-IO maintains that the president should consider reversing the order for the interest of peace,” he stressed.

The SPLM extra-ordinary convention was convened to deliberate and pass basic documents for the operations of SPLM as a party. These basic documents included constitution, manifesto and structure. The deliberation was also expected to consider incorporation of Arusha agreement of SPLM reunification into the documents.
