Aweil Girls’ Secondary school in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state has emerged as champions of a peace volleyball match played on Wednesday, after beating Salva Kiir Girls’ school 3-2.

The game was organized as part of events to commemorate the International Day of Peace and it was organized by the Public Information Office of United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

The head teacher of the winning team, Philip Ugathio, welcomed and appreciated the effort by UNMISS in promoting peace and unity through the role of sports in peace-building.

“Without peace in our community and the country at large, no development will take place in all sectors. For the proper growth and development of our young generation, and for the realization of a bright future of our nation, let us all embrace peace in our families, institutions and the government. I therefore want to thank UNMISS for making it their mandate to promote peace and stability in the Republic of South Sudan,” he said.

The UNMISS state Coordinator in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Koliab Nahataba, urged the students to promote peace among themselves.

“It is the spirit of participating together that we should really uphold. It is the spirit of togetherness that we should really promote. UNMISS is indeed grateful to the people of South Sudan, especially the people in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, for maintaining peace. I want to call upon you and to ask you to treasure the peace that you are enjoying. It is the peace that gives us the space to be able to achieve development that we so badly need,” he said.

Northern Bahr el Ghazal state is one of the most peaceful states in South Sudan. There are no communal conflicts reported, neither cattle rustling, raiding or social conflicts.

The organizers of the sports tournament hope that using sports to promote peace will make the country more united and cohesive.
