A county land director has been killed, together with fifteen other people, in communal conflicts in Lakes state. Speaking to media in Rumbek, the state security advisor, Marial Amoum Malek said the county land director Mr. Maliet Alueth was killed in what appeared to be revenge attacks.

Mr. Malek said about sixteen people, including the county director, were killed Tuesday night in separate attacks in the State. He said of those killed, seven were killed in an incident between Rumbek Central and Rumbek North counties.

The security advisor blamed the escalating insecurity in the state on the availability of firearms in the hands of civilians, killing for revenge and failure of law and order.

“In any corner in Lakes state, the spirit of revenge attack occupies the minds of the civilian population. On the way to Maper, the ambush killed seven people… six from Rumbek North and one from Rumbek Central. In Cueibet, they killed nine people from both sides,” he said.

State authorities over the weekend imposed a seven-day dusk to dawn curfew in Rumbek town, in an attempt to stop the movement of criminal elements.

President Salva Kiir  ordered the deployment of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in Lakes state. Many people have called on President Kiir to declare a state of emergency in Lakes state, while state leaders have called for the removal of caretaker governor Major General Matur Chuut.

So far nobody knows what will happen in Lakes state and what kind of decision the president will make.
