South Sudan’s vice president has told citizens, especially the young people, to support the government and embark on national reconstruction.

Vice president James Wani Igga said the time is now ripe for the youth to rise up and contribute constructively towards the progress of the nation in all levels.

“We have done our work. The nation has been liberated for you, young people. We are giving it to you, young people. The nation is like an egg and we have given it to you. If you don’t handle this egg properly, then it will slide from your hands and fall down to crash,” the VP told a politically rally in Lasu payam of Yei River county on Tuesday.

“This is the time, comrade, we want development. Let us talk issues of development comrade, so that we eradicate poverty,” he said.

The VP with a delegation from state and national governments, are in public rally visits to find out the needs of the citizens and to dissuade them from joining any rebel movement.

Two public rallies were held in Lasu and Otogo payams of Yei River County on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Vice president Igga said the government is committed to peace.

“We have come with two issues. The first one is to detail the issue of rebels that some people want to get involved. The second issue is, we want to know what are the cries and expectations of the citizens,” he told the gathering.

Yei Catholic Bishop Erkolano Lodu Tombe said bringing peace is a responsibility of every citizen and the warring parties. He said this during a courtesy visit paid by the VP on Wednesday morning.

On the peace negotiations, the bishop said only a proper negotiation will bring lasting peace. He said it is better for the negotiations to move slowly but in the right way.

“It is useless to hurry with an abrupt way of trying to bring about peace, then after tomorrow we get back into fighting,” he warned.
